Our Origin Story
The Soul of the Mission
Slater was the quiet inspiration that lead to this sanctuary. One of our co-founders is a survivor of domestic violence only because of Slater's intervention during several attacks. When she was finally awarded safety from her abuser, Slater was silver haired and arthritic. He spent his remaining years in peaceful retirement, and passed away comfortably, gazing into his owner's eyes. In his absence, the understanding grew that every dog spending their old age in shelters have their own untold stories of service and selflessness. For many reasons, adoption rates of senior dogs is the lowest, and their euthanasia rates the highest, of any canine demographic. At Slater's Sanctuary, we have deemed this unacceptable and dedicated our lives to changing it. Today, we carry on Slater's legacy by being the forever home for dogs who have nowhere else to go, ensuring their golden years are their brightest ones yet.
Project Progress
Slater's Sanctuary is starting from the ground up. We’ve secured five acres in Monterey County, California, and installed infrastructure for maximum canine comfort. We’ve placed a tiny home for our live‑in caretakers with steps to every couch for old hips. We are now building private, fully enclosed dog houses for future senior residents’ bedtime. Each cozy home will have a heated bed and fenced yard.
A Day in the Life
Our residents will be attended full time by their live in senior humans, and have regular visits from vet techs, students, volunteers, and the families of our trustees. We will carefully orchestrate canine social groups, meeting each resident's unique needs as they relax in the hills. Regular day trips to the nearby lake and cafe will ensure these Golden Oldies receive lots of stimulation and play. With your help, we’ll create private, fully enclosed dog houses with heated beds for a safe night's rest.
